Essential Fatty Acids-Advanced

The most important fact about Omega fatty acids in your diet is.... you must consume them in the proper ratios and most foods today are way out of proportion. The omega 6 to omega 3 ratio needs to be between a 1:1 and 4:1. Omega 3 and omega 6 interact with each other so the balance between them is crucial for good health.

Major Changes Have Happened In The Food Industry
That Has Affected America's Food Supply

The proper, or natural Omega proportion was not a problem until the food industry made some major changes which interfered with our previously "natural" diet. Before the beef industry started feeding cattle in feedlots for six months prior to processing (starting in the 1950's), the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio was 1:1 to 1:2 (natural). Once cattle were taken off grass and fed a feed mixture for fattening, the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio became 20:1(UN-natural). Grass has a near perfect omega 6 to omega 3 ratio, while corn and milo are high in omega 6 and low in omega 3.

This is one example of the changes the food industry has made in the last few decades. Others include farm raised (and farm-fed) fish, growth hormones, medications, genetically engineered fruits & vegetables, and preservatives, just to name a few. Remember, the food industry is dollar driven just like any business, including the medical industry.... and your good health is not part of the equation.

Omega Fatty Acids Are...

Omega fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats.  They are healthier than saturated fats and have many metabolic functions. Polyunsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and remain liquid when refrigerated or frozen. Monounsaturated fats, found in olive oil, are liquid at room temperature, but congeal (solidify) when refrigerated. Saturated fats are solid. So, there are Polyunsaturated, Monounsaturated, and Saturated fats to consider.

Omega fatty acids 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids (EFA’s).  Our bodies cannot manufacture omega fatty acids so we must consume them in our diets.  Omega 9 fatty acids are not essential.  Our bodies need omega 9 fats, but we can manufacture omega 9 fats from other sources.

Top Omega 3 Benefits

1. Improves Heart Health - Omega 3 benefits include reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, reducing the risk of heart-related sudden death and lowering unhealthy triglyceride levels. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends two servings of fish a week for healthy persons and one serving per day of fish or fish oil supplement containing at least 900mg of fish oil for persons with heart disease. Emu oil contains Omega 3 essential oil.

2. Improves Mood - Persons suffering from mood disorders such as depression benefit from supplementation of Omega 3. The lack of omega 3 fatty acids (DHA) has been linked by researchers to depression.

3. Improves Memory and Brain Function - DHA and fish oil, and emu oil stimulate memory and the ability to learn. Mothers who take supplemental DHA during their pregnancy and lactation may increase their baby's IQ.

4. Reduces Allergies - Fish oil or emu oil protects against the symptoms of hay fever, sinus infections, asthma, certain food allergies and allergic skin conditions like hives and eczema.

5. Reduces Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms - Omega 3 benefits come from the EPA and DHA in fish oil or emu oil that reduce the amount of compounds causing inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of inflammatory arthritis.

6. Improves Eye Health - Consuming fish oil or emu oil for their omega fatty acids is related to lowered risk of developing age related macular degeneration, an increasing common eye disease in people over 50.

7. Reduces PMS Symptoms in Women - Omega 3 is converted into substances called 'prostaglandins type-3' that control contractions of the uterus, which cause the cramping.

8. Reduces PMS Symptoms in Women - Fish oil and emu oil helps protect the skin against damage from UV exposure, and skin disorders such as psoriasis can consider fish oil or emu oil supplementation a treatment option.

Besides adding cold-water fish to meal planning, an easy way to enjoy Omega 3 benefits is by adding fish oil or emu oil supplementation to your diet. Protect yourself from health problems related to the lack of the essential fatty acids DHA and EFA. The best of the Omega 3 sources is high-quality fish oil or emu oil.
