About Emu Ranch Water Systems

A water system with a backup is an absolute necessity for an emu ranch of any size.

Adult emus require a lot of water. If you are on a public water system, it needs to be dependable. Depending on how many emus you have, a backup water system could be necessary even if you are on a public water system. Our main watering system for the emus at Emu Oil Depot is a well from our lake (below). Our backup watering system is from our regular ground deep-well.

Emu Lake During Construction

Sherriee Magness is standing in the bottom of the lake during construction. The emu pens are in the background at upper left. The trees laying in the bottom are for fish structure.

You can just see the small 8' x 8' building (lake-house) that houses the well pump and tanks to the right of the pier.

Well House At Lake

Here, you are shown the lake house, pier, and emus in the background. You can also see the water level is much lower than the picture above. The water level constantly varies by several feet depending on rain, weather, etc.

Lake Water-Well Setup

The main watering system from the lake requires everything a normal water well does. It requires a pump, a 220 volt circuit, a tank, and a building to house it all. The only difference between this and a regular well is the water supply. One is from the lake and the other is from an underground water table.

If your main water system goes out, it isn’t possible to water a lot of emus without a water system so a backup is absolutely necessary!

Portable Waterer Setup

You can see the water box below that allows for access to buried water lines. This is necessary to prevent emus from interfering with faucets, etc., and saves freezing problems. During freezing weather the hose can be changed and water is readily available.

The water box  is connected by hose to a portable waterer with a float (below). The stand, or "rack" is necessary to prevent the birds from getting in it. The splitter is supplying a water-dripper for a newly planted oak tree.
